Should I hire carpet cleaners or buy a carpet steamer?

I have a Berber carpet-white in a large part of my home. It looks a bit dirty and stained (land only, I think … no food or juice) a little, and I wonder if it's worth the trouble of hiring cleaners professional carpet cleaning. Or should I buy a steamer (like a small $ 150 200) to make the most of myself? Do I need to clean carpet to do a great job and once the boat for aftercare? I'm not really sure of the advantages and disadvantages, so I hope someone out there know!

With an off-white carpet, I think I would do both. Use your own maid to keep traffic areas to reach very dirty and treat stains before they actually installed, and once someone in a rental for all deep cleaning of the whole thing.
